Why Gimel ID

New technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cell & Gene Technology (CGT) present us with two challenges in particular: 

  • How to make sure humans benefit from AI and 
  • How to foster health equity

Gimel ID can help coping with these two challenges:

Firstly, to make sure that AI is beneficial to humans, it must be possible to clearly identify humans. How do you prove that you are really you? This becomes increasingly difficult the more AI acts in place of humans. The lack of proof of personhood (PoP) represents a gap in the digital landscape that must be addressed. A global and inclusive proof of one`s identity is needed, while data protection and a social consensus are required. Gimel ID can get us there, providing a global identity network based on DNA biometrics.

Secondly, DNA biometrics build on CGT. CGT enables individualized medicine, which can leapfrog the way how we treat diseases and do prevention. But the use of CGT is expensive. In the context of DNA diagnostics, Gimel ID and the CGTcoin associated provide a new financial network. The issuance of tokens of the new CGTcoin currency can – besides aligning the incentives of all network participants around the growth of the network - help to reduce the cost for patients, care providers and payers. Ideally, it can even help to offer DNA diagnostics for free. In this respect, CGTcoin can foster health equity by helping to provide DNA diagnostics to everyone.

 What Gimel ID is

Gimel ID is being established with the objective of developing a globally inclusive identity and financial network, owned by much of the global population. If successful, Gimel ID has the potential to significantly expand economic opportunities, provide a reliable means of differentiating between humans and AI in the digital realm while maintaining privacy, and facilitate global democratic processes.

The concept of "proof of personhood" is a fundamental tenet of Gimel ID. It entails establishing the identity of an individual as both human and distinct. Once verified, the individual can assert their authenticity and differentiate themselves from other individuals without disclosing their real-world identity.


The lack of a globally agreed upon standard for proof of personhood is an ongoing challenge that hinders the ability to vote online and distribute value on a large scale. The issue is becoming increasingly urgent as the growing power of AI systems will further complicate the task of distinguishing humans from bots.  How Gimel ID works

Gimel ID is built on the Gimel ID platform, which provides a privacy-preserving global identity network. By utilizing Gimel ID, individuals will be able to demonstrate their authenticity and uniqueness to any platform that integrates with the protocol. This will facilitate fair airdrops, provide protection against bots/sybil attacks on social media, and enable the fairer distribution of limited resources. Additionally, Gimel ID can facilitate global democratic processes and innovative forms of governance, such as quadratic voting.

To engage with the CGTcoin protocol, individuals are required to download GimelApp, the inaugural wallet app to support the creation of a Gimel ID. Individuals are required to connect with a biometric device, the Gamma, to have their Gimel ID verified. Most Gammas are being operated by a network of independent local businesses, known as Gamma Operators. The Gamma uses biometric data to verify the user's identity and issue a Gamma-verified Gimel ID.

 DNA biometrics as PoP mechanism

In untrusted environments, the only viable means of differentiating individuals is through biometrics. Biometrics represent the most fundamental means of verifying both human identity and uniqueness. Most importantly, they are universal, enabling access irrespective of nationality, race, gender or economic status. Furthermore, biometric systems can be highly privacy-preserving if implemented correctly. Biometrics facilitate the building blocks by providing a recovery mechanism (even in the event of memory loss) and can be utilized for authentication purposes. Consequently, biometrics facilitate the person-binding of the PoP credential.

While the current coverage of DNA biometrics is almost 10 percent in the US and some 3 percent in the EU population, their use will increase rapidly in the coming years as individualized medicine and biopharmaceuticals progress. As much as Cell & Gene Technology (CGT) is leveraged as the future diagnostics standard in medicine, DNA biometrics will be inclusive to everyone. While the understanding of distinctive genes and the role they play for certain diseases grows, the scope of DNA sequencing expands (genotyping vs. comprehensive genome sequencing). .

 The Gamma

Based on the conclusion that the only path to verify uniqueness on a global scale is DNA biometrics, the Digital Supply Institute is developing a custom biometric device, called the Gamma. This device issues an AI-safe PoP credential called Gimel ID. The Gamma is being built from the ground up to verify humanness and uniqueness in a fair and inclusive manner.

The issuance of Gimel ID is privacy-preserving, as the humanness check happens locally, and no DNA data need to be saved (or uploaded) by the issuer. Using Gimel ID reveals minimal information about the individual, as the protocol employs zero-knowledge proofs. The vision for the Gamma device is for its development, production and operation to be decentralized over time such that no single entity will be in control of Gimel ID issuance.
